Democracy or Reflection, Hon. Yahaya Ability Urges Nigeria to Build a Truly Working Nation
Hon. Yahaya Ability, a member of the People’s Democratic Party Board of Trustees and senatorial candidate for Niger North Zone, has passionately addressed the concerning state of the nation under the All Progressives Congress administration.
In a candid interview in Minna, Yahaya Ability lamented Nigeria’s decades-long backwardness characterized by excessive borrowing without commensurate development. He highlighted the deteriorating infrastructure, escalating corruption, rising cost of living, and increasing insecurity across the country.
Focusing on Niger State, particularly the Niger North Senatorial Zone, he expressed deep concern over persistent fear among communities despite increased state allocations and constituency funds.
He underscored that the primary duty of any governor is to ensure the safety of lives and property, noting that many citizens still live in uncertainty about their security.
Yahaya Ability emphasized that true leadership should be judged by the security and welfare of the people, not by promises or deception.
He pledged that if given the opportunity to represent Niger North in the Senate, security would be a top priority and never treated as a secondary issue in the National Assembly.
He committed to advocating relentlessly for vulnerable communities, the marginalized, and the voiceless, ensuring that their concerns influence decision-making.
He also called for Nigeria to move beyond mere democratic commemorations and work towards building a nation that functions equitably for all, free from regional, tribal, or religious divisions.
Marking Nigeria’s Democracy Day, he argued that the day should serve as a chance for national introspection—an honest reflection on challenges and a renewed resolve to address them.
“The true test of democracy,” he stated, “lies not in ceremonial observances, but in the safety, dignity, and prosperity of the people.”
