Gunmen attacked Amaechi’s convoy and set the ADC office in Ubima ablaze.
Armed individuals suspected to be political associates on Friday engaged the convoy of South-South ADC leader Chibuike Amaechi, resulting in a gunfight with security personnel along the Ubima–Omuanwa route in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The incident took place as Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, was visiting his hometown of Ubima to complete electronic registration as an ADC member.
Reports indicate that prior to the arrival of the former governor around 12:15 p.m., alleged thugs had set up a roadblock, turning back buses carrying ADC supporters en route to the registration.
The situation intensified when the armed group confronted Amaechi’s convoy as it attempted to enter the community.
Security personnel accompanying Amaechi engaged the attackers in a firefight, eventually forcing them to retreat into nearby vegetation after being overwhelmed by superior firepower.
The attack occurred hours after suspected assailants reportedly set fire to the ADC ward office in Ubima on Thursday night.
Despite these developments, Amaechi proceeded with his visit, completing his electronic party registration in the presence of hundreds of supporters.
After inspecting the damaged party office, Amaechi called for calm among party members and urged restraint from resorting to violence.
He commended the swift response of the police, DSS, and NSCDC officials to the incident.
Amaechi emphasized that those responsible for the attacks must be brought to justice.
