Police Repatriate $23,000 to Victim of International Romance Scam
The Nigeria Police Force INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja has successfully repatriated $23,000 recovered from an international romance scam to a victim in the Cayman Islands.
This action followed a request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, which sought assistance from INTERPOL NCB Abuja in investigating Nigerian national Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, accused of defrauding a Cayman Islands resident through an online romance scam.
In a statement released on Friday, Acting ACP Benjamin Hundeyin, the force spokesman, noted that intelligence-led investigations by INTERPOL NCB Abuja led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of the funds.
He explained that after completing necessary documentation and collaborating with international partners, the recovered money was handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service via the British High Commission in Abuja.
Hundeyin stated that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of the investigation.
The statement further detailed, “The Nigeria Police Force INTERPOL NCB, Abuja, has successfully repatriated the sum of $23,000 recovered from an international romance scammer to the victim in the Cayman Islands.
“The repatriation followed a request from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service seeking assistance from INTERPOL NCB Abuja to investigate a Nigerian national, Achufusi Obioma Ikenna, who defrauded a resident of the Cayman Islands through an online romance scam.
“INTERPOL NCB Abuja conducted discreet, intelligence-led investigations that led to the arrest of the suspect and the recovery of $23,000.
“Following all necessary documentation and collaboration with international partners, the funds were officially handed over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service, through the British High Commission in Abuja, represented by Mr. Shaun McLeary, for secure delivery to the victim. The suspect will be arraigned after the investigation’s conclusion.”
This repatriation highlights the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing, international cooperation, and disrupting transnational cybercrime networks.
