NUJ Niger State Council Plans to Create Journalist Database

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, has announced plans to develop a comprehensive database of all practicing journalists in the state.
The Union’s State Chairman, Dr. Abu Nmodu, shared this during the receipt of a preliminary report from a committee tasked with verifying and revalidating its members’ statuses.
He explained that the goal of the proposed database is to differentiate genuine journalists from impostors and content creators who falsely claim to be media professionals.
Dr. Nmodu added that the database would also allow the Union to compile a detailed directory with personal information and photos of each registered member to facilitate easy ID verification and membership revalidation.
He stated that the complete directory would be accessible online, similar to systems used at the NUJ National Secretariat and other state councils nationwide.
He emphasized that this initiative would help standardize, streamline, and elevate journalism practices in Niger State.
The NUJ Chairman praised the committee for their effective work, assuring that their report would serve as a vital reference to improve journalists’ operations statewide.
During the presentation, Committee Chairman Mr. Dan Amasingha of the Correspondents’ Chapel reported that 172 journalists meet the required educational and professional standards to practice journalism, according to Sections 2 (A, B, and C) of the Union’s constitution.
He noted that 80 practitioners hold degrees in disciplines outside mass communication and related fields, while 30, mainly employed in government ministries, departments, and agencies, hold Ordinary National Diploma (OND) qualifications.
Amasingha urged the Union to support these members in obtaining the necessary professional credentials to advance their skills and careers.
He praised the committee members for their integrity and said the process was conducted with diligence and transparency, given its significance for the future of journalism in the state.
He also expressed gratitude to the NUJ leadership for the opportunity to contribute and assured the committee’s willingness to support the Union’s future growth and development.
