Obasanjo Meets Babangida at Hilltop Residence Amid 2027 Presidential Planning
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo was photographed on Monday visiting ex-military ruler Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida at his hilltop residence in Minna, fueling speculation about behind-the-scenes moves for the 2027 presidential race.
Obasanjo, who arrived at the Ahmed Bola Tinubu International Airport, was immediately taken to Babangida’s residence after being received by Niger State protocol officials.
The meeting lasted approximately 30 minutes before Obasanjo returned to the airport. Political analysts note that the timing of the visit holds significant implications.
“One source indicated that the visit could be related to national issues and the upcoming 2027 elections, which are already gaining momentum,” the report stated.
Reports allege that Obasanjo is plotting a joint presidential ticket for Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aiming to challenge Atiku Abubakar for the party’s nomination and subsequently face President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
“The proposed ticket is reportedly designed to first contest Atiku Abubakar’s bid for the party’s presidency, and if successful, to mount a broader opposition against Tinubu’s re-election,” sources revealed.
Observers suggest that Babangida has encouraged Kwankwaso to leave the NNPP for the ADC as part of a strategic political maneuver.
“It was also reported that Babangida advised Kwankwaso to exit the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) for the ADC, seen by some as part of a wider political strategy.”
Both Obasanjo and Babangida have maintained silence publicly, but political insiders interpret the secretive Monday visit as a calculated move in the evolving 2027 power dynamics.
