Niger State Government Issues Two-Month Evacuation Notice to Residents Near Kainji Lake
The Niger State Government has issued a two-month deadline for residents living in hamlets around Kainji Lake to vacate the area for resettlement under the guidance of the Emirate Council.
Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the announcement during a condolence visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alh. Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, at his palace in New Bussa. The visit was to sympathize with the Emir and the community following recent terrorist attacks.
The Governor emphasized that resettlement is essential to prevent collateral damage. In collaboration with the federal government, his administration aims to clear the forest, eliminate criminals exploiting Kainji Lake as a base, and make the land safer for residents.
He expressed concerns over the influx of unprofiled individuals into the Emirate, noting that such movements pose security risks, especially with the activities of informants undermining efforts.
The Governor urged the Emirate Council to fulfill its duties by cooperating with security agencies and government at all levels to enhance safety within the Emirate.
He extended heartfelt condolences to the Emir and community members, especially the families of victims, praying for the repose of the deceased and strength for their loved ones.
Additionally, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to peace and security nationwide. He expressed support for action plans aimed at relocating people and reclaiming the forest for community use.
The Emir of Borgu, Alh. Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, assured his cooperation with authorities to identify and prosecute informants, stressing that protecting lives and property remains a top priority.
He appreciated the Governor’s visit and pledged ongoing support for policies and programs designed to improve the welfare of the people.
