Peter Obi Joins ADC Ahead of 2027 Elections in Pursuit of National Rescue

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate representing the Labour Party (LP), has formally defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a coalition-supported political platform, as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, announced his decision on Tuesday during the launch of the ADC coalition platform at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu.
During the event, Obi emphasized that this move is part of a broader effort to initiate a “national rescue journey” aimed at protecting Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
“We are concluding this year with the hope that in 2026, we will begin this rescue journey,” he stated.
He highlighted the significance of early preparation for the 2027 elections, cautioning against electoral irregularities.
“We will oppose election rigging using all lawful means in 2027,” Obi asserted.
Obi also called on political stakeholders to comply with electoral regulations, especially regarding candidate credentials.
“There is still a one-year window for everyone to verify their academic qualifications. We want to avoid returning to court only to find that it is a pre-election issue,” he added.
He stressed that preparations for the electoral process should start immediately.
“The pre-election process should commence now,” Obi declared.
The event was attended by prominent figures including ADC National Chairman Sen. David Mark, former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, ex-Deputy Speaker Emeka Ihedioha, and senators Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Gilbert Nnaji, Enyinnya Abaribe, and Sam Egwu.
Obi previously resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on May 25, 2022, citing irreconcilable differences and developments that impeded constructive participation.
He then joined the Labour Party two days later and ran in the 2023 presidential election, ultimately finishing in third place.
