Tinubu Reaffirms Commitment to Tax Schedule, Rejects Review Calls

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has confirmed that the Federal Government will proceed with implementing the new tax laws, with full implementation scheduled for January 1, 2026, as originally planned.
Tinubu announced this in a press statement issued by the State House in Abuja on Tuesday.
He described the tax reforms, some of which took effect on June 26, 2025, as “a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country.”
According to the President, the new tax laws are not aimed at increasing the tax burden on Nigerians but at driving structural reforms and enhancing governance.
“The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonization, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract,” he said.
Tinubu called on all stakeholders to support the ongoing implementation phase, noting that the reforms have fully moved into the delivery stage.
“I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage,” the President said.
He acknowledged the public debates surrounding alleged changes to specific provisions of the recently enacted tax laws but maintained that no serious issue has been found to justify suspending the reforms.
“Our administration is aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws. No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process,” Tinubu said.
The President emphasized that public confidence in government policies is built through consistency and sound judgment.
“Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures,” he added.
Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for existing laws, assuring that the Presidency will collaborate with the National Assembly to resolve any arising issues.
“I emphasise our administration’s unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws,” he said, adding that the government will ensure the “swift resolution of any issue identified.”
The President assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue acting in the national interest.
“I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility,” he stated.
