Senate Declares Kidnapping, Banditry as Terrorism, Approves Death Penalty
The Senate has formalized the classification of kidnapping and banditry as acts of terrorism, endorsing the implementation of the death penalty for such offenses.
The chamber has called for an investigation into the withdrawal of military personnel from a Kebbi school shortly before a bandit attack, as well as an inquiry into the circular concerning the killing of Brigadier Uba in Maiduguri. The findings are expected within two weeks.
On international cooperation, the Senate resolved to engage the United States Congress and other allied parliaments to enhance intelligence sharing, counter-terrorism training, and the provision of technological support.
All relevant security committees are mandated to brief the Senate within one week on their operational activities.
In remembrance, the chamber observed a one-minute silence in honor of the victims of recent attacks.
Supporting President Tinubu’s security initiatives, the Senate reaffirmed its commitment to addressing national security challenges and pledged to support a comprehensive overhaul prompted by citizens’ demands.
Furthermore, Senate leadership will meet with President Tinubu to convey the resolutions and discuss subsequent steps.
