Drama Unfolds at Maiduguri International Airport as Passengers Stranded Over Pilot Dispute.

From Our Correspondent

A tense standoff at Maiduguri International Airport on Monday left over 100 passengers of Max Air stranded for several hours due to a dispute between the airline’s pilots and management regarding unpaid entitlements. The situation quickly escalated, leading to panic and confusion among travelers who were already on board the aircraft and awaiting takeoff.*

Eyewitness accounts revealed that the pilots declined to proceed with the flight, citing unresolved payments as the reason for their refusal. The flight attendants expressed that the impasse was solely tied to the pilots’ unmet financial obligations.

As the news of the situation spread, passengers were forced to disembark, leading to heightened frustration amongst those affected. One traveler reported, “We had all taken our seats and were preparing for departure when we were informed that we needed to leave the aircraft.”

After a period of uncertainty lasting several hours, the matters were reported to have been resolved amicably, enabling passengers to re-board the aircraft. Affected flight patrons noted a considerable tension initially, but they were informed that the issues had been settled by the airline’s management.

Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed that the dispute was resolved internally without requiring regulatory intervention. “The flight eventually departed around 2:00 PM, indicating that both parties reached an agreement. Since it was handled internally and the flight was able to proceed, we consider the matter closed,” Achimugu stated.

He added that the NCAA usually refrains from becoming involved in salary disputes unless a formal complaint is filed, emphasizing that safety and operational standards remain the primary focus of the regulatory authority.

Max Air’s Executive Director, Shehu Wada, characterized the incident as a miscommunication, asserting that the airline has addressed the issue. “This was fundamentally a communication gap, and it has been resolved,” Wada clarified.

Passengers were eventually able to continue their journey, yet the incident underscores ongoing concerns related to internal disputes within the aviation sector and their impact on travelers.
