CP NIGER RECEIVES NBA MINNA BRANCH ON COURTESY VISIT, COMMITS TO UPHOLDING HUMAN RIGHTS PROVISIONS.

The Commissioner of Police for Niger State, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, MNIPS, welcomed the executives of the Nigerian Bar Association, Minna Branch, led by Chairman Barr. Isyaku Barau Esq, on a courtesy visit, at the State Police Headquarters in Dutsen-Kura, Minna.

During the visit, the Chairman of the NBA Barr. Isyaku expressed appreciation for the Commissioner of Police and his management team’s efforts in addressing the issue of thuggery in Minna and other areas of the state.

 

He emphasized that security is a collective responsibility and shared the association’s observations regarding security matters within the state.

He raised concerns about the excesses of vigilante groups and urged the Commissioner to ensure these non-state actors receive proper training and enlightenment on rules of engagement, aligning with best practices and the rule of law.

Additionally, he commended the contributions of former legal officer of the Command, CSP Jude Akaeze, in successfully prosecuting cases on behalf of the Command.

The Chairman highlighted the significance of effective exhibits management for case prosecution, suggesting that the right personnel with the necessary qualifications be assigned to this critical task for optimal outcomes.

Further discussions involved enhancing the relationship between the Police and legal practitioners, as well as the need for ongoing training and development for investigating officers and prosecutors. The association took the opportunity to invite the Commissioner of Police to join them as a senior colleague.

 

In response,CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, MNIPS expressed gratitude for the visit and reassured the association of his commitment to maintaining human rights standards, including the rights of individuals in custody.

He acknowledged the privilege of being part of the association and expressed his intention to join them in the near future. He recognized the importance of training and continuing education for police personnel, noting that the Command has been actively engaging in sessions focused on the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and other relevant laws to enhance service delivery.

The Commissioner of Police also emphasized the need for synergy, collaboration, and fostering a cordial relationship between the Police and the legal community.

He discussed ongoing efforts with the Attorney General’s office concerning Police lay prosecutors, given the extensive responsibilities associated with prosecution.

Deputy Commissioner of Police, Investigation, DCP Ibrahim Adamu, echoed the sentiments and expressed appreciation for the positive relationship between the Special Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) and legal practitioners, assuring continued cooperation moving forward.
