MANAGING MEDIA CONDUCT AND UPHOLDING REGULATORY OVERSIGHT IN DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE.

Issued by: Ministry of Information and Strategy, Niger State.

BACKGROUND

On August 1, 2025, during an expanded Niger State APC Caucus Meeting held in Minna, His Excellency, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, Governor of Niger State, issued a directive for the suspension of Badegi FM 90.1, a private radio station operating in the state. The directive followed reports alleging unethical broadcasting practices and incitement capable of disturbing public peace and undermining state authority.

The Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, who was present at the meeting, has since issued a public call for calm while affirming that regulatory decisions regarding broadcast licenses fall under the jurisdiction of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

GOVERNMENT POSITION

The Niger State Government, while prioritizing peace, national unity, and responsible journalism, recognizes the rule of law and regulatory authority of the NBC as enshrined in Nigeria’s legal framework governing broadcasting.

To that end, the Ministry of Information and Strategy, Niger State, acknowledges the necessity for formal engagement with the NBC on alleged breaches of professional broadcasting standards by Badegi FM, and reaffirms its commitment to a lawful, democratic process in resolving the matter.

KEY ISSUES RAISED

Alleged unethical broadcasting conduct and incitement by Badegi FM.

Concern about executive overreach raised by media stakeholders, including the NUJ.

Affirmation of NBC’s legal authority to suspend, revoke or enforce broadcast standards.

The need to preserve press freedom while ensuring responsible journalism and national security.

POLICY ACTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS.

1. Formal Notification to NBC
The Niger State Government has initiated the formal process of reporting the incident to the National Broadcasting Commission for investigation and regulatory action.

2. Promotion of Ethical Journalism
The Ministry encourages all media houses in Niger State to strictly adhere to the Nigerian Broadcasting Code and professional ethics in content dissemination.

3. Stakeholder Dialogue
The Ministry shall convene an engagement with media stakeholders, including NUJ and station owners, to reinforce the importance of ethical media conduct and open channels of redress.

4. Assurance of Non-Interference.

While addressing security-related media concerns, the Niger State Government commits to non-interference in regulatory matters beyond its legal jurisdiction and urges all parties to respect lawful processes.

CONCLUSION

The Ministry of Information and Strategy reiterates the state’s unwavering respect for freedom of the press and democratic governance, while calling for media responsibility that supports peace, accountability, and truth. We encourage all stakeholders to remain calm and await the findings and resolution from the National Broadcasting Commission in the interest of justice, press freedom, and national security.

Signed:

Hon. Binta Mamman
Honourable Commissioner
Ministry of Information and Strategy
Niger State Government.

No Hiding Place for Adversaries in Kontagora, Niger State -Gen. Abubakar The Commander, Corps of Artillery, Major General Zakari Abubakar, has declared that there is no longer a safe haven for criminal elements operating in Kontagora and its environs. General Abubakar made this known during a field demonstration involving the test-firing of artillery guns held at the Nigerian Army Military Training Center (NAMTA) in Kontagora. The test-firing is aimed at sending a strong message to criminal groups that the area is fully secured and under military watch. He urged troops to remain vigilant, professional, and proactive in their duties, emphasizing the need to deny miscreants any opportunity to disrupt peace and security in the region. The Commander also called on residents to support security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could aid ongoing operations to rid the area of insecurity. According to him, sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace. “Peace is the foundation of every meaningful development. We all have a responsibility to promote and sustain it,” he stated. General Abubakar further appealed to religious leaders to continue preaching messages of peace to their congregations, stressing that peace is a universal language that must be upheld by all. He also extended a call to all aggrieved individuals or groups to lay down their arms, embrace peace, and reintegrate into society as responsible citizens committed to the progress and development of Kontagora.
