Niger State Government Urges Riverside Communities to Heed Federal Flood Warnings.
The Niger State government has issued a strong advisory urging riverside communities to take immediate action in response to flood warnings from the federal government, following forecasts of heavy rainfall that could lead to significant flooding across the state.
In a statement released by Hon. Jonathan Vatsa, the Special Adviser to the governor on communication, media, and strategy, the government highlighted the urgent need for residents living near riverbanks to relocate to higher ground to avoid a potential repeat of the devastating Mokwa flood disaster that resulted in over 200 fatalities and extensive property damage.
The caution comes as the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread thunderstorms and significant rainfall, warning that 38 locations across various states are at risk of flooding this month, impacting an estimated 2,000 communities across 15 local government areas within Niger State.
“Given the recurring nature of flood disasters in Niger State, it is imperative that our communities take this warning seriously,” Vatsa stated. “We cannot afford to witness another catastrophic event like the Mokwa experience, which left lasting scars on our communities.”
He urged traditional, community’s, and religious leaders to assist in disseminating information and encouraging adherence to the federal government’s flood warnings. The government also plans a statewide awareness campaign, emphasizing the need for proactive measures as the rainy season approaches.
NiMet’s weather outlook indicates that early morning thunderstorms may affect northern states, with heavy rains predicted in regions including Borno, Zamfara, Bauchi, Kano, and others. Communities in areas identified as prone to flooding are advised to prioritize their safety and make necessary preparations.
As part of a broader strategy to mitigate flood risks, the federal government is moving forward with the establishment of a National Flood Insurance Policy, aiming to enhance the country’s resilience against future flood-related disasters.
