NBA Minna Branch Commends Governor Bago’s Proactive Measures on IBBU Closure, Calls for Collective Security Vigilance
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Minna Branch, has commended the Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, for his swift and decisive action in ordering the immediate closure of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, following recent security breaches and the tragic loss of lives within the university community.
In a solidarity message issued in Minna on Thursday, the Chairman of the NBA Minna Branch, Isyaku Barau, Esq., described the Governor’s intervention as timely, courageous, and necessary, noting that it reflects responsible leadership and a genuine concern for the safety and well-being of students, staff, and the broader university environment.
“We commend His Excellency, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, for his proactive and bold decision to temporarily close IBBU Lapai in response to the regrettable breach of security and loss of lives. This step underscores the sanctity of human life and the priority which government must place on the safety of its citizens—particularly within educational institutions,” Barau stated.
The NBA Minna Branch expressed its condolences to the families affected by the recent violence and reaffirmed its solidarity with the university community during this difficult period. It also emphasized the urgent need for stakeholders across society to actively support security efforts.
“Security is no longer the exclusive preserve of government. In this era where insecurity is penetrating even our citadels of learning, all citizens must assume a measure of responsibility—whether as students, educators, community members, or legal practitioners. Our collective vigilance, cooperation, and civic discipline are essential in combating this growing menace,” Barau added.
He noted that the increasing vulnerability of academic institutions is a matter of grave concern, and that beyond temporary closures, there is a need for sustainable, intelligence-driven security frameworks to protect schools and campuses across the state.
The NBA Minna Branch assured the Niger State Government of its continued support and partnership in all efforts to uphold law and order, protect human life, and foster peace and stability throughout the state.
“The rule of law demands not only justice in our courts but also security in our schools and safety in our homes. We must all rise to this challenge with unity of purpose and patriotic resolve,” the statement concluded
