Niger State Government Strengthens Security Measures for IBBUL Students After Tragedy.

By Our Correspondent

In response to the tragic murder of a 300-level student, reportedly by phone snatchers off-campus, the Niger State Government has committed to enhancing security measures for students at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL).

This announcement was made during an emergency security meeting led by Hon. Hamidu Mu’azu Jantabo, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Hon Jantabo extended condolences to the bereaved family and urged students to avoid protests or any destructive behavior, warning that such actions could result in legal consequences under the new penal code.

To improve student safety, several key initiatives were announced:

Over 200 trained local vigilantes will be deployed to patrol the campus and its surroundings continuously, deterring criminal activities.

Security checkpoints will be established to provide additional safety for students commuting to and from the university.

Regulations will be enforced on landlords to ensure that accommodations for students meet safety standards. The government plans to collaborate with the Niger State Urban Development Board to eliminate unapproved lodging facilities that could pose security risks.

A new transformer will be provided immediately to address ongoing power issues, contributing to a safer environment.

Motorcycles will be supplied to enhance the mobility of security personnel during patrols.

Coordinated Patrols and Student Security Committees will be established to maintain a secure campus atmosphere.

The implementation of mandatory student ID cards will improve security identification processes.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohammed Hadi Sulaiman encouraged students to adopt a vigilant attitude, stay informed about their surroundings, and report any suspicious activities.

He emphasized the importance of communal responsibility in maintaining a safe environment and engaged with the Lapai Emirate Council to strengthen community-based security strategies.

Stakeholders, including government officials, traditional leaders, and representatives from the student body, expressed their commitment to taking swift action aimed at restoring safety and trust within the university community.

These measures underscore the Niger State Government’s dedication to ensuring a safe educational environment for all students at IBBUL.
