NBA Minna Branch Expresses Condolences Following Mokwa Flood Tragedy.
On behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association, Minna Branch, we extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Niger State Government, and the resilient people of Mokwa Local Government Area following the devastating flood that occurred on Thursday, May 29, 2025.
In a press release issued to the media in Minna and signed by Isyaku Barau, Esq., Chairman of the NBA Minna Branch, we express our profound sorrow over this tragic loss of life.
Barrister Isyaku noted that the recent recovery of two additional bodies has brought the total confirmed fatalities to 153, underscoring the severity of this disaster.
The statement emphasized that the flood has claimed not only precious lives but also caused widespread destruction, with countless homes devastated and properties worth millions of naira lost to the surging waters.
This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for proactive measures to mitigate and prevent such occurrences in the future.
We call upon the Niger State Government and relevant authorities to implement strong and strategic regulatory and policy actions to address the underlying causes of flooding.
Recommended measures include comprehensive urban and environmental planning, stringent enforcement of building regulations, dredging of water channels, and targeted interventions in riverine communities throughout the state.
We also urge our fellow citizens, particularly those who have historically disregarded or violated government guidelines aimed at flood prevention, to discontinue such practices.
Through collective responsibility, cooperation, and support for government initiatives, we can safeguard our communities and protect lives and property from future environmental disasters.
As an Association, we stand in solidarity with the government and the people of Mokwa during this period of mourning and recovery.
