FG Clarifies Temporary Lifting of Sachet Alcohol Ban in Nigeria.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued an important clarification regarding the recent ministerial decision on sachet alcohol in Nigeria.

During a press briefing held in Abuja on Monday, Kenneth Azikiwe, Director of the FCT Directorate of NAFDAC, emphasized that the ban on sachet alcohol has not been permanently lifted.

Azikiwe confirmed that the temporary lifting of the ban is valid only until December 31, 2025. He urged the public to disregard any misinformation suggesting a permanent removal of the restrictions.

“There is a ministerial lifting on the ban of sachet alcohol, but it is only temporary and will be reviewed by December 31, 2025. After this date, the full enforcement of the ban will commence,” he stated.

The temporary relief aims to provide manufacturers and regulators with the necessary time to work together for a more structured and effective implementation of the ban.

Azikiwe also highlighted NAFDAC’s commitment to public education, noting that awareness campaigns have reached every state in the country.

Furthermore, he reiterated the agency’s stance on the sale of alcohol to minors, emphasizing that individuals under the age of 18 should not be able to purchase these products, as indicated on product labels.

He also commended the Distillers and Beverages Association of Nigeria for their collaboration in this awareness initiative.

In conclusion, Azikiwe reassured the public of NAFDAC’s dedication to regulating alcohol consumption, highlighting that sachet alcohol products containing less than 200 millilitres will be phased out after December 2025.
