Suspension of Fubara,Lawmakers Damages Nigeria’s Image — Jonathan.

From Our Correspondent

Former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concerns that the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials in Rivers State has harmed Nigeria’s image.

Speaking as the Chairman at the Haske Satumari Foundation Colloquium in Abuja on Saturday, Jonathan voiced his disappointment over the removal of elected officials, emphasizing that such actions reflect poorly on the nation.

Typically, Jonathan avoids commenting on political matters to prevent escalating tensions; however, he felt compelled to speak out due to public pressure from concerned Nigerians.

According to the former president, the actions of key political figures, particularly those in the executive and legislative branches, have cast a negative light on Nigeria. He noted that a country’s image and its ability to attract investments largely depend on the behaviors of its executive, legislature, and judiciary.

Jonathan criticized the current situation where individual influence can dictate judicial decisions, arguing that it undermines public trust in the judicial system. He stated, “The image of a country and the extent to which it can attract investments depend significantly on the behavior of its government institutions.”

He emphasized that the independence of the judiciary is crucial for maintaining public trust and that the circumstances in Rivers State, where it appears that one individual could influence judicial outcomes, compromise this principle.
