The Deterioration of Traditional Leadership in Nigeria: A Call for Reform – Obasanjo.

From Our Correspondent.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has raised alarm over the infiltration of criminal elements into Nigeria’s traditional leadership, asserting that individuals such as drug addicts, bandits, and kidnappers are now being recognized as traditional rulers.

In his recently released book, “Nigeria: Past and Future,” Obasanjo critiques the current selection processes for these important positions, highlighting a troubling trend of increasing numbers of traditional leaders who may lack the necessary qualifications and moral integrity.

He lamented the decline of the once-respected traditional training and apprenticeship systems that historically reinforced the dignity associated with royal offices. This deterioration, according to Obasanjo, has exacerbated Nigeria’s socio-political challenges.

In a poignant statement, he remarked, “Today, there are criminals, drug addicts, vagabonds, bandits, and kidnappers as so-called traditional rulers,” emphasizing the responsibility of traditional leaders to uphold cultural and moral standards.

He expressed disappointment over instances of traditional rulers engaging in electoral malpractice, questioning how one could reconcile such actions with the role of a custodian of justice.

Reflecting on the past, Obasanjo noted the former nobility and respect commanded by traditional rulers during the colonial era and early post-independence, indicating that these values have been eroded. He identified an urgent need for reforms to restore the dignity and significance of traditional leadership in the country.

Obasanjo concluded with a call to action, advocating for traditional rulers to evolve into vital contributors to national development rather than being perceived as liabilities.

He urged for the reinstatement of the honor and respect that traditional leadership once commanded, positing that such a transformation is essential for Nigeria’s progress and greatness.
