NLC Warns Civil Servants to Stop Taking Online Loans or Risk Dismissal.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Niger State chapter, has affirmed that it is illegal for civil servants to take online loans exceeding three-quarters of their monthly salary, as this violates civil service rules and can lead to dismissal.
In an interview with reporters in his office in Minna, Niger State, NLC Chairman, Comrade Idrees Abdulkareem Lafene, addressed concerns about deductions from some workers’ February 2026 salaries without prior notice, some of which were made by unrecognized online platforms.
He clarified that no official complaints have been received so far but assured that anyone with a legitimate complaint regarding deductions will have their funds refunded.
Additionally, he warned civil servants in the state to stop engaging with online loan platforms that have no legitimate basis, as this could lead to financial hardship for them and their families.
Comrade Lafene advised workers to seek loans only through their affiliated unions, cooperative societies, or traditional banks to help resolve issues.
This statement responds to multiple reports from civil servants in Niger State who have raised concerns about salary deductions allegedly for loans obtained from commercial banks and online platforms.
