Urgent Call for Accountability in Nigeria’s Power Sector, Over 800 workers laid off in Niger state.

We, the concerned citizens, express our deep concern regarding the reckless actions of the electricity distribution company owners, especially the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, in dismissing experienced staff, notably from the Technical unit and other sectors.

Over 800 employees have been laid off in the past month, with more expected. This trend underscores a disturbing prioritization of profit over people and infrastructure. Unlike banking, where transactions are purely numerical, the power sector directly impacts lives.

The recent series of fatal accidents and electrocutions highlights the grave consequences of neglecting safety standards and expertise. Abuja Electricity Distribution Company has lost over 20 staff members to electrocution this year alone, not to mention third-party casualties.

We demand transparency regarding the investments made in the power sector since privatization. Specifically, we seek details on the number of 15MVA injections, 7.5MVA units, circuit breakers, substations, transformers, and network expansions within Abuja’s franchise area. Preliminary indications suggest minimal or no such investments.

The government, holding a 40% stake, appears inactive in overseeing operations. Why is there only one government director on the board? The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) are failing in their oversight roles.

We, the concerned citizens, question the justification for continued support of these distribution companies. With government, state, and individual investments in these firms, what returns are being realised?

Furthermore, we request detailed information about the loan that facilitated UBA’s takeover of AEDC. How much was borrowed, how much has been repaid, and when will banks exit their involvement? The former Managing Director, Engr. Ernest Manpuwaya, stated repayment would be completed by 2021/2022, with staff promotions. Why does the company still carry this loan?

We call upon NUEE to take immediate action to safeguard its members and the Nigerian public. We urge the government to exercise its oversight responsibilities to ensure these companies prioritize safety, meaningful investment, and the well-being of Nigerians.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! The power sector is too crucial to be left to profit-driven interests. We will not be silenced!
