Catholic Diocese Condemns Abduction at St. Mary’s Schools in Papiri, Niger State

The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has strongly condemned an early morning attack on St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, on November 21, 2025.
The incident, which took place between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., involved armed assailants who abducted several pupils, students, teachers, and security personnel, some of whom were shot during the attack, causing fear within the local community.
In a formal statement, Fr. Jatau Luka Joseph, Diocesan Secretary, expressed serious concern for the safety of those kidnapped and assured that security agencies have been promptly notified. Efforts are underway, in collaboration with security forces, community leaders, and government officials, to ensure the safe return of the victims.
The diocese urged the public to stay calm, support ongoing security efforts, and pray for the quick and safe release of all abducted individuals.
Further updates will be provided as verified information becomes available. The diocese also called for divine intervention, praying for the swift release of the captives and continued protection for the community.
It can be recalled that the government science college, Kagara, in Niger State, was attacked, and teachers and students were kidnapped. A rescue mission was launched, and, thank God, the abductees were rescued.
If lessons were truly learned, our schools would be better attended. That school still exists, but lacks the necessary attention in our state. Public schools are becoming death traps rather than the safe havens they are supposed to be.
