NUJ Urges Merit-Based Appointments for Information Officers in Niger State
The Niger State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Management of the Niger State Ministry of Information and Strategy to prioritize merit in the posting of Information Officers to various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
During a recent courtesy visit by the newly elected executives of the NUJ Ministry of Information Chapel to the State Chairman, Comrade Abu Nmodu, concerns were raised regarding the potential negative impact of favoritism and personal affiliations on the integrity and standards of the ministry.
Comrade Nmodu emphasized that personnel decisions rooted in sentiment could degrade the quality of information dissemination within the state, which he described as a crucial responsibility of the ministry.
He urged the state government to enhance investment in media operations and equip Information Officers adequately to represent the state’s interests effectively.
While acknowledging the recent recruitment of new Information Officers by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, he also suggested that a retreat be organized for both new and existing officers to help them adapt to the evolving landscape of the information profession.
The NUJ Chairman assured that the State Council would continue to support the Ministry of Information Chapel, particularly regarding training and staff welfare initiatives.
Earlier, the newly appointed Chairman of the Chapel, Comrade Usman Jibrin Kodo, expressed gratitude to the State Council for overseeing a smooth transition during their elections.
He reaffirmed the Chapel’s commitment to cooperating with the State Council and advocated for further recognition of the Chapel’s significant role due to its size and effectiveness.
Kodo also commended Comrade Nmodu for his exemplary leadership and achievements since taking office in 2021.
