It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who has died at the age of 90. The revered monarch passed away in the early hours of Monday, coinciding with the festivities marking his 90th birthday and the first anniversary of his coronation.
Oba Olakulehin succeeded the late Oba Lekan Balogun and was regarded as a significant figure in the cultural and traditional landscape of Ibadan.Â
A source within the Olubadan-In-Council confirmed the news, stating, “We received the message that the paramount ruler passed away this morning. He has joined his forefathers. Though it has to be officially announced by the state government.”
As the community mourns, it is noted that the Otun Olubadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the next in line for the title, is currently out of the country. There is anticipation for his return, and palace sources have indicated that he will be briefed upon his arrival.
The state government is expected to make an official announcement regarding the monarch’s passing in due course.
