Nigerian Red Cross Society Empowers Orphans with Sewing Machines in Niger State
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) National Headquarters in Abuja, supported by its dedicated members, has made a significant contribution to the lives of two orphans in the Mokwa Division of the Niger State Branch. Fatima Abubakar and Amina Abubakar, both active volunteers of the division, received brand new sewing machines to aid their journey toward self-reliance.
During the presentation, Paul Orukamayan, a member of the National Disaster Response Team (NDRT) deployed to Niger State, emphasized the importance of this gesture, which aligns with the vision of the Secretary General to support volunteers in need. The sewing machine was procured at a cost of 150,000 Naira, with an additional 20,000 Naira allocated for sewing materials.
Paul, who also led a two-day training on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) for volunteers in Mokwa, noted that this support aims to equip the orphans with skills that will enable them to sustain themselves after completing their training in tailoring. He urged the relatives of the orphans to refrain from selling the machine, as it is intended to provide a source of livelihood for them.
In an emotional response, Mrs. Isah Suleman, the aunt of the two orphans, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the Nigerian Red Cross Society for their generous gesture. She prayed for the organization’s continued success and for blessings upon its members nationwide, assuring that the sewing machine would be used for its intended purpose.
Mallam Isah Abubakar Sunlati, the Mokwa Divisional Secretary, commended the leadership of the Branch and the National Headquarters for their contributions and pledged to assist in establishing an educational support fund for Amina, which includes an additional allocation of 50,000 Naira specifically for her education.
The NRCS remains committed to empowering its volunteers and supporting the vulnerable in society, helping to foster self-sufficiency and resilience within communities.
