Niger State Governor Commits to Enhancing Security and Development at IBBU Lapai.

Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to the safety and stability of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU) Lapai during a recent stakeholder meeting at the Government House in Minna. The meeting addressed concerns over recent security breaches that led to the institution’s indefinite closure.

Governor Bago emphasized that the state-owned university is a vital asset and will remain operational.

He urged the university’s management to collaborate closely with the State Security Committee to implement robust security measures. Proposed initiatives include the recruitment and training of security personnel, the development of detailed identification cards for students and staff, and enhanced access control systems on campus.

Addressing safety concerns, the Governor reassured parents about their children’s welfare, stating that decisive actions would be taken against any student behavior threatening institutional stability.

He proposed that parents be required to sign an undertaking regarding their children’s conduct within the university community.

Additionally, Governor Bago encouraged the university management to explore innovative solutions for student accommodation through a Built, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model, as well as enhancing revenue-generating initiatives.

He called for the consolidation of all courses to the main campus in Lapai within the next three years, instructing that satellite campuses be closed.

The Governor stressed the importance of fostering a harmonious relationship between the university and its host community to facilitate socio-economic growth in the area.

He announced plans for an upcoming town hall meeting with Lapai stakeholders to further discuss security and development strategies.

The meeting also highlighted concerns from education officials, including the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Abdullahi Adamu Mamagi, and the Lapai Local Government Chairman, Abdullahi Musa Kirikpo, regarding inadequate accommodation and security personnel at the university. They appealed to the Governor for intervention to resolve these challenges.

Prof. Mohammed Hadi Suleiman, Vice Chancellor of IBBU Lapai, shared the institution’s ongoing efforts to secure additional hostel facilities for students.
