Niger State Assembly Initiates Comprehensive Audit of Orphanages and Motherless Babies’ Homes.

From Our Correspondent.

The Niger State House of Assembly has instructed the State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in conjunction with relevant security agencies, to conduct an immediate statewide verification and audit of all orphanages and motherless babies’ homes.

A formal list of legally recognized facilities, as well as those operating without proper authorization, will be published.

This decision arises from a motion introduced by Hon. Pharm. Umar Nasir (Paikoro), which underscored the concerning rise in unregistered and unregulated homes throughout Niger State. These facilities pose significant risks to child safety and public welfare.

The Assembly expressed concern that numerous homes operate outside the oversight of government regulatory agencies, failing to meet established child welfare protection standards.

Furthermore, such establishments may inadvertently become hotbeds for illicit activities, including child trafficking, kidnapping, and exploitation.

In response, the Assembly adopted several resolutions, including:

– Directing the Ministry of Women Affairs to create a standardized and accessible licensing framework for orphanages statewide.
– Reviewing existing child protection laws and suggesting increased penalties for the illegal operation of orphanages and involvement in child trafficking.
– Mandating the Ministry of Information and Local Government Authorities to execute public awareness campaigns regarding the risks associated with unlicensed homes.
