NULGE Inaugurates New Leadership, Reaffirms Commitment to Local Government Autonomy

By Our Correspondent

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has inaugurated its newly elected National Administrative Council (NAC) members. The ceremony, attended by key stakeholders from both government and organized labor, marks the beginning of Comrade Aliyu Haruna Kankara’s tenure as the President General of NULGE.

Notable attendees included the Minister of Labour and Productivity, Alhaji Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi; the Registrar of Trade Unions; and delegations from various state governments.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, led a delegation that included Deputy National President Comrade Audu Amba and the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT). Former NULGE Presidents, such as Dr. Deji Akinwaler and Alhaji Ahmad Labbo, were also present.

In his address, NLC President Comrade Ajaero emphasized the need to implement the Supreme Court’s ruling on local government autonomy, warning against any political interference. He stated, “The release of funds to local governments should not be at the whims and caprices of government. This is the position of law.”

Outgoing President General Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji reflected on the union’s achievements, particularly its efforts toward local government autonomy, unity within the union, and capacity building for members. He paid tribute to the late Ibrahim Khaleel for his foundational contributions to the union’s success.

In his inaugural speech, Comrade Kankara pledged to continue the struggle for local government autonomy, negotiate for special allowances for union members, and enhance capacity-building initiatives.

He expressed gratitude to his predecessor for fostering peace and progress within the union.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates to the new NAC members by Comrade Ayuba Wabba, former NLC President and Chief Returning Officer of the conference, as well as the administration of the oath of office.

The occasion also served as a moment of reflection, honoring departed union leaders and celebrating the reunion of former leaders who have advanced to significant roles in their respective states.
