Niger State Government Advances Partnership Discussions with NRC for Improved Logistics

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna.

The Niger State Government has continued its discussions with the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) to establish a robust partnership aimed at ensuring the safe transportation of farm produce . by rail.

The talks took place with the Managing Director of the NRC, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, at the Palace of the Oniru of Iruland, His Royal Majesty Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II.

The “farmer Governor” emphasized that Niger State is actively participating in the Federal Government’s Food Security initiative and is making significant progress.

He noted that a partnership with the NRC would further enhance this effort. The Governor acknowledged that logistical challenges have long been a major hurdle in post-harvest processes but expressed optimism that collaboration with the NRC could help overcome these issues.

The Governor also extended his gratitude to the Oniru of Iruland, Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Abisogun II, for his warm reception and ongoing support for his administration.

In response, Dr. Kayode Opeifa assured the Governor that the NRC is committed to supporting the administration with logistics and supply chain processes nationwide, as part of its core mandates.

He expressed that the NRC aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and supports every state and business involved in productive ventures.

Dr. Opeifa emphasized that the Corporation would ensure that farm produce reaches its destinations at reasonable prices and in optimal condition, in line with the Federal Government’s food security agenda.

Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal reiterated his support for the Niger State Government’s efforts to actualize the Food Security initiative under President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

He mentioned that he has held several meetings with the Chairman of Niger Foods, Sammy Adigun, and the Minister of Finance, who also serves as the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, to discuss ways to bolster Niger Foods, benefiting Lagos State as the commercial capital with a large population.

Oba Oniru described Sammy Adigun as audacious, good, and resourceful, expressing confidence that with his support, significant accomplishments can be achieved in the agricultural sector.

Additionally, Sammy Adigun, the Chairman of Niger Foods, stated that the Niger State Government is diligently working to finalize its agreement with the NRC due to its critical importance. He expressed optimism that train services between Minna and Lagos states would resume shortly.

It is noteworthy that the Niger State Government initiated discussions with the NRC a few months ago to create a partnership that would address the logistical issues contributing to post-harvest losses.
