Tanker explosion : IGP Directs Enhanced Operations in Motor Traffic Divisions for Greater Efficiency
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, NPM, has expressed sincere condolences to the government and the citizens of Niger State in the aftermath of the tragic tanker explosion that took place on January 18, 2025, at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway.
This calamitous event was triggered when a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) lost control, resulting in a fire that claimed over 73 lives and left many others injured, along with significant damage to property and local businesses.
Dr. Egbetokun underscored the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols on the roads and issued a strong warning against negligence and non-compliance with regulations that can lead to such devastating incidents.
In response, the IGP has instructed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the operations of the Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) within their respective commands.
This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with other traffic management agencies to ensure rigorous adherence to safety standards and traffic regulations on highways.
He also urged vehicle owners and drivers to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and to strictly follow traffic laws to avert future tragedies.
While praying for the souls of those lost in this incident, the IGP calls on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their operations to prevent the recurrence of such tragic events.
