Niger Assembly calls for upward review of pension.
Niger State House of Assembly has called for an increase in pensions paid to retired civil servants in the state to enhance their social and economic well-being.
This request followed a motion presented by Ahmed Muhammed, the representative for Edati Constituency, during a plenary session on Tuesday.
According to the 1999 Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution, pensions should be reviewed every five years with any state civil service salary adjustments.
Ahmed pointed out that some retirees still receive a meager monthly pension of three thousand naira, describing their situation as dire.
He emphasized that many retirees are in precarious conditions despite having dedicated their lives and services to the state.
Additionally, Muhammad Sani Idris, the representative for Tafa Constituency, underscored the state government’s need to establish a mechanism for the upward review of pensions.
He highlighted that this step is essential to alleviate the economic hardships faced by retirees who have loyally contributed to the state’s development.
