Niger assembly urges govt to provide relief materials for victims of rainstorm in Kpautagi community of Mokwa LGA

The Niger State House of Assembly has called on the executive arms to provide relief materials for victims of rainstorm in Kpautagi community of Mokwa Local Government Area of the State.

This was the resolution reached during the plenary after a motion brought under matters of urgent public importance by Hon. Zakari Ndagi Kinbokun, Member Representing Mokwa Constituency.

In his motion, Hon. Zakari Ndagi Kinbokun said on July 5, 2024, Kpautagi community experienced heavy rainstorm that destroyed alot of property

He added that property worth millions of naira were destroyed, including buildings and business premises were flooded, while two drainages were blocked

The lawmaker said several farmlands were submerged, many crops destroyed and livestocks washed away during the rainstorm.

Hon. Kinbokun added there was need for the executive arm of the government to urgently mobilize it’s manpower and resources to assist the victims by providing immediate support for repairs and reconstruction of damaged buildings , assist farmers who have lost crops and livestock..

After extensive deliberations by members, the house unanimously adopted the prayers of the motion.

In the same vein the Niger State House of Assembly also called on the executive arm of government to reconstitute the Niger State Law Reform Commission.

This was sequel to a motion on the need to review obsolete laws in the State by Niger State Law Reform Commission sponsored by Hon. Engr. Abdulrahman Bala Gambo, Member Representing Borgu Constituency.

Hon. Engr. Bala Gambo, informed his colleagues that on Tuesday 9th July, 2024 a motion was moved by Hon. Yahaya Abubakar Ahmadu, Member Representing Gbako Constituency calling on House to mandate the Law Reform Commission to review obsolete laws in the State.

He said that the House resolved that the House Standing Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters together with the Mover of the motion tasks the Law Reform Commission to avail it with all obsolete laws that require review in Niger State and report back to the House in 2 months.

Hon. Engr. Gombo explained that the Niger State Law Reform Commission which is to comprise of five seasoned lawyers was established with the sole purpose of making recommendations for the purpose of reviewing all Niger State Laws in order to ensure their systematic and progressive development and reform, recommend to the House of Assembly for the elimination of anomalies, repeal of obsolete laws,

According to him, several of the laws operating in Niger State are obsolete and hence the need to be reviewed and to be in line with modern day reality and circumstances in which the laws are meant to regulate, unfortunately the Law Reform Commission which is saddled with this responsibility is yet to be constituted.

At the end of presentation, the prayers of the motion was unanimously adopted that there is a dire need to review obsolete laws in State and the House calls upon the Executive Arm of Government to re- Constitute the Niger State Law Reform Commission in order for it to commence the review of such laws.

In another development the Niger State House of Assembly has Commenced debate on the second reading of a Private Member Bill for a Law to Provide for Environmental Degradation Control, Administration and the Collection of Internal Revenue Due to the State through the Ministry of Environment and for related matter.

At the end of deliberations on the Bill, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin -Daji refered the Bill to the House Standing Committee on Environment for further Legislative action and report back to the house within eight weeks.
