NUC THREATENS TO SHUT ILLEGAL VARSITIES – as ES lauds FG unwavering support to university education

The National Universities Commission (NUC) says it is working earnestly to  ensuring that standard and quality university education are provided to Nigerians.

Mr Chris J. Maiyaki, the Acting Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), stated this while fielding questions on a television programme.

He said that the commission has standard for all universities to follow and threatened to close down any university operating below the set standard.

Maiyaki said that the allegations of fake degrees awarding institutions is being investigated by the federal government through the Ministry of Education.

“Discovering of fake degrees from West African countries which has raised concern about the credibility of academic qualification issued by certain institutions. The nation  woke up to the news about undercover journalist who patronized one of the universities, whose origin is from one of the African countries. He was reported to have obtained his Degree within six weeks.

“It is an allegation. We are engaging all the stakeholders. Let’s us not preempt but watch out for the outcome  of the investigation.

“We will leave no stone unturned in the course of this investigation to make sure that the nation will be proud that the Hon. Minister of Education and this government has responded quickly to this allegation,” he said.

He assured that the commission would continue to expose and decisively deal with  those perpetrating illegality in the university system.

“We will continue to chase out those whose business is to perpetrate illegality to bring our well respected universities reputation to disrepute,” he said.

The NUC executive scribe however called on the public not to allow such reports by under cover journalists disturb them, adding that the commission will tackle all illegal acts in the system.

Maiyaki commended the federal government for funding the universities in the country and called for its sustenance.

“We are happy with the current government for its sustained interest and unwavering support.

“The federal government has placed and prioritized the university system considering the importance of education to human and societal development,” he said.
