Governor Umaru Bago Calls for Solutions to Communal Clashes, Regional Development Strategies
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has urged the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) to develop solutions addressing communal conflicts within the region.
The governor conveyed this request during a meeting with NCDC management, led by Governing Board Chairman Barrister Cosmas Akighir, at the Government House in Minna.
Expressing praise for the commission’s impactful work, Bago emphasized the importance of focusing on security issues and communal clashes, particularly farmer-herder conflicts.
He proposed organizing a summit of North Central Governors to create a platform for formulating region-specific strategies to advance development and resolve challenges affecting the zone.
Governor Bago highlighted the need for the commission to play a proactive role in mitigating climate change effects, notably the annual overflow from four hydroelectric dams, which damages communities and farmland.
He noted that these damages prompted the state to request 13% derivation from the federal government, considering that the hydro dams are situated within Niger State.
Furthermore, Bago urged the commission to prioritize investments in agriculture and education, vital sectors for societal progress.
As a collaborative partner, Niger State will provide the NCDC with a liaison office and logistical support to enhance its operations.
Cyril Tsenyil, Managing Director of the NCDC, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships rooted in its founding Act, focusing on sustainable development initiatives across North Central.
He outlined plans covering transportation, roads, healthcare, education, agriculture, industrialization, water supply, electricity, and telecommunications.
Dr. Tsenyil also expressed readiness to work with the Niger State Government on insecurity issues.
Governing Board Chairman Barr. Cosmas Akighir described the visit as part of the NCDC’s broader engagement strategy with member states to identify partnership opportunities and strengthen regional development.
