IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Announces Expulsion of Key Officials Over Misconduct
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has officially expelled former Directorate of State head Chika Edoziem along with nine other members due to violations of group regulations. The announcement, dated June 21, 2026, was issued while Kanu remains in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre, serving a life sentence on treason-related charges.
The individuals affected include Tony Nzurumike, Austin Agbanyim, Chukwudi Oforma, Isaiah Ubah, Collins Chinedu, Chinasa Nworu, Fidelis Ejiogu, Chidinma Nworu (also known as Juliet Edward Filatro), and Keke Uda. They were accused of actions inconsistent with the organization’s internal rules and governance.
Kanu stated that these expelled members no longer possess the authority to represent or act on behalf of IPOB. He emphasized that the movement adheres to a strict code of conduct guiding all members and officers, with appointment and removal powers centralized in the leadership office.
He clarified that those dismissed were appointed to the Directorate of State in 2017 with a limited tenure, but they continued in their roles beyond the designated period. The expulsion followed multiple violations, including failure to support him during detention, mishandling welfare and legal issues, disregarding instructions on fundraising for medical needs, and interfering with his legal team.
Additional allegations include spreading false claims, unauthorized removal of officers, and modifying parts of the group’s oath. Kanu warned that association with the expelled individuals could be perceived as opposition to the movement’s interests.
He directed IPOB supporters worldwide to align with a new leadership structure, the fourth Directorate of State, headed by Chris Nwaogu. Despite these internal changes, Kanu affirmed that the organization remains unified under his leadership.
