University of Jos confirms 2 deaths,3 injured in Angwan Rukuba attack, as examination starts on 13th April

By Yakubu Busari

The University of Jos has confirmed the death of two students who lost their lives in the recent attack by an unknown gunman in the aftermath of the Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, and one of the staff sustained various degrees of injuries.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Professor Tanko Ishaya, PhD, FBCS, FNCS,, made the confirmation at a press conference held at the University Senate chamber on Thursday.

He said, we have a total of 5 members of the University of Jos, including a staff member who is affected, and we unfortunately lost 2 out of the 4 students.

According to him, the entire University community is deeply saddened by the loss of two of its students:  late Adeyemo Oluwafemi Temitope and Abel Joro Gershon.

He assured students and parents that security has been beefed up on campus, along the roads leading to the University, and in the entire city of Jos.

Ishaya also disclosed that normal activities resumed after the Easter break on Tuesday, 7th April 2026, as he condemned AI propaganda as unfounded.

He explained that the University had issued a press release last week that the examinations will continue on Monday, 13th April,2026, adding that the University management decided to shift the continuation of the examinations to consider some of the students who have traveled for the Easter break.

Prof.Tanko emphasized that in an effort to address the insecurity around the University community, he has partnered with the Nigeria Police, CP Bassey Ewah, the Nigeria Army, after the visits by the Lieutenant General Waidi Sahibu, COAS, General Commander 3Div EF Oyinlola, on confidence-building and engaging with the stakeholders in the community.

He clarified that throughout the period of the crisis, the University hasn’t been closed for a day by appealing to the students and the parents that the University of Jos is safe and academic activities have resum.

Tanko appreciated the leaders of the various communities, especially the neighboring university, for providing our students protection and to further plead for continuous support in this direction.

Tanko Ishaya called on the media to continue supporting them as they work tirelessly to address the challenges of insecurity bedeviling the University.

He commended Governor Caleb Mufwang for his overwhelming support of the University during the breakdown of laws and order by unknown gunmen, killing at least 25 people.

Tanko charged Nigerians to eschew politics of bitterness and embrace peaceful coexistence amongst the diverse ethnic groups because the permanent site development took over 50 years, and relocating wouldn’t prevent any conflict with the host community.

He admonished citizens to imbibe the spirit of tolerance and respect each other’s culture and religion worship for the benefit of all sundry.
