Amaechi to Address Loyalists Amid Speculation of Defection to ADC
Former Minister of Transportation, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, is scheduled to meet with his supporters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as he contemplates a shift in his political allegiance following his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) last month.
Amaechi, who has been a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, expressed his conviction that the APC has strayed from its foundational principles, stating, “This is the appropriate moment to call it quits as the party has derailed from the lofty ideas that berthed its formation and so, can no longer inspire hopes in Nigeria for a greater future.”
The meeting, set for Wednesday, will provide an avenue for Amaechi to discuss the current political landscape and potentially reveal his intentions concerning the upcoming 2027 general elections. Sources indicate that he may formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) along with his substantial following, which includes disillusioned supporters from both the APC and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Concern over the political climate in Rivers State has been mounting, particularly in light of the perceived marginalization of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, who has faced restrictions on his constitutional duties since a controversial emergency rule was declared in March. An APC chieftain highlighted the dissatisfaction among the populace, emphasizing that this has created a fertile ground for a mass movement toward the ADC.
Amaechi is anticipated to be a leading candidate for the ADC’s presidential nomination in 2027, bolstered by widespread popularity across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic regions and a strong political track record.
His resignation letter, dated July 1, 2025, articulated his determination to unite with other patriotic Nigerians to address the failures and challenges currently facing the nation under the APC’s governance. The support from Niger Delta host communities and various stakeholders further underscores the significant backing Amaechi could receive in his pursuit of higher office.
