NIWA Implements Safety Measures for Boat Operators in Shiroro Local Government Area

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has launched a significant initiative to enhance safety among boat operators in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State.
As part of its social responsibility efforts to address the frequent boat accidents occurring across the nation, NIWA, through its Niger-Kwara Area office, distributed over 500 free life jackets to local boat operators in the Kwauta Riverine community.
During the distribution event, Area Manager Akapo Adeboye emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure compliance with safety regulations throughout Nigeria, not just in Shiroro.
He reiterated the importance of adhering to the operational guideline of “no life jacket, no boarding,” underscoring NIWA’s commitment to safety in water transportation.
The decision to conduct the life jacket distribution on a market day was strategic, aimed at ensuring that all passengers traveling via boat are equipped with life jackets and understand their proper usage. In addition to this, he noted that boat drivers are now expected to maintain a manifest of all passengers prior to boarding.
Akapo assured the community that NIWA is dedicated to fostering safe, efficient, and impactful water transportation, which is vital for the economic development of the nation.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner for Transportation, Chief Marine Officer Engineer Yahaya Idris warned boat operators of the legal consequences of neglecting safety measures.
He urged them to wear life jackets, avoid night travel, and refrain from overloading their vessels.
Community leaders, including the Village Head, representatives from the Boat Drivers Association, and various marine unions, praised NIWA for the life jacket donation.
They pledged to adhere to safety guidelines and ensure that all operators utilize the life jackets effectively before embarking on any journeys.
