NiMet Issues Flash Flood Risk Alert for July 2025 as Rainfall Intensifies Across Nigeria. 

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has raised an alarm with its Flash Flood Risk Alert for July 2025, cautioning that several states nationwide are likely to face flash flooding as rainfall becomes more intense. 

This warning is consistent with NiMet’s earlier Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), which emphasizes the necessity for urgent preparedness across the country.

In a recent infographic shared on social media, NiMet identified Sokoto State as a high-risk area for flash flooding this month. Other states with significant risk levels include Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.

To mitigate potential impacts and enhance public safety, NiMet has issued essential advisories. The agency urges residents to clear drainage systems around their homes and communities to facilitate proper water flow. Furthermore, the public is strongly advised against driving or walking through flooded areas, as hidden hazards and deceptive currents can pose severe dangers.

“The flash flood risk alert for July 2025 identifies states susceptible to flooding events due to the onset of rainfall, as predicted in our Seasonal Climate Prediction,” a representative from NiMet stated.

The agency also cautioned individuals living in low-lying areas, recommending they consider relocating to safer ground if formal warnings are released. 

Households are advised to prepare emergency kits containing essential supplies, including non-perishable food, water, first aid items, flashlights, and power banks. It is crucial to disconnect all electricity and gas supplies in the event of flooding to avoid risks of electrocution and explosions.

For communities situated in hilly or mountainous regions, NiMet highlighted the importance of taking preventive measures against mudslides, especially in areas vulnerable to soil erosion.

Finally, the agency called for collective action from community leaders and residents to foster awareness regarding flood risks and safety precautions, stressing the need for prompt responses to alerts and staying informed through official weather updates.
