NAN Managing Director Calls on NUJ to Address the Issue of Fake Journalists.

The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Malam Ali-Muhammad Ali, has urged the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to take decisive action against the growing issue of fake journalists.
His appeal was made during a meeting in Abuja on Friday, where he received a delegation from the NUJ led by Deputy President Dr. Abimbola Oyetunde.
The NUJ executives visited NAN headquarters to discuss activities planned for the union’s upcoming 70th anniversary, set for June 21.
During the meeting, Ali highlighted the increasing prevalence of fake journalists, who he described as significant contributors to the spread of misinformation.
He emphasized the need for NUJ leadership to actively engage in identifying and apprehending these individuals. Moreover, he called for the union to equip its members with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively navigate the implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in journalism.
Ali commended the NUJ for its planned activities to mark the 70th anniversary, recognizing that the media has historically played a crucial role in advocating for democracy in Nigeria. “Nigerian journalists have made significant sacrifices to promote democracy, justice, and an egalitarian society. I acknowledge the efforts of past union leaders in ensuring Nigeria’s freedom from military rule,” he stated.
He reiterated that NAN stands as a natural ally to NUJ and aligns with the values upheld by other journalist unions, such as the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
Ali reassured the delegation that NAN is committed to participating in all events associated with the anniversary celebration.
Additionally, he praised Mrs. Grace Ike, Chairperson of the FCT Chapter of NUJ, for her commitment to advancing the chapter’s objectives.
Dr. Oyetunde concluded the meeting by inviting NAN to join in the celebration of the union’s milestone anniversary.
