Niger State Government Approves Reopening of Schools Following Security Review.

The Niger State Government has authorized the reopening of both public and private schools across the state, effective Monday, 12th January 2026, following favorable security evaluations.
This decision was announced in a press release dated January 2, 2026, issued by the Niger State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education under the Office of the Honourable Commissioner.
The approval was granted by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Niger State, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, after thorough consultations with relevant security agencies.
The government emphasized that this move demonstrates its commitment to protecting lives while maintaining access to quality education.
The ministry clarified that only schools in secure areas are authorized to reopen on the designated date, including boarding schools located in safe zones. Schools situated in unsafe or insecure locations are to remain closed until security assessments are completed and clearance is given.
All school authorities are instructed to register returning students immediately upon resumption. The collected data should be submitted to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education within one week for record-keeping and oversight.
Local Government Area Chairmen have been tasked with ensuring a sufficient security presence around schools in their jurisdictions, in collaboration with security agencies.
For transparency, the ministry will publish an official list of all approved schools permitted to reopen on January 12, 2026.
