Niger State Assembly Raises Concerns Over Illegal Mining and Unauthorized Migrants Calls for Enhanced Immigration Measures

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna

The Niger State House of Assembly has expressed serious concern regarding the increasing presence of undocumented immigrants involved in illegal mining activities across the state, a situation that is exacerbating security challenges in various communities.

During a courtesy visit to the Assembly Complex, Assistant Comptroller General of the Immigration Service, Zone D, Mr. Anthony Emeka Chikezie, was received by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. (Dr.) Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkindaji.

The Speaker linked the surge in illegal mining to the unchecked movement of foreign nationals entering mining zones without proper authorization.

In a statement issued by Mairo Adamu, Acting Head of Media and Public Relations, the Speaker highlighted that many illegal miners are migrants from neighboring African countries who bypass border controls. He emphasized that lapses in border security are contributing significantly to ongoing insecurity.

“The state is already grappling with serious security issues, and the unchecked entry of individuals engaged in illegal mining worsens the situation. The Immigration Service must do more,” the Speaker stated.

He called on the Service to bolster its efforts, asserting, “We must intensify our efforts to regulate the inflow of undocumented immigrants. Effective enforcement will help mitigate some of our current security challenges.”

Rt. Hon. Sarkindaji assured the Immigration Service of the Assembly’s commitment to addressing operational challenges and collaborating with the state government to provide the necessary support.

He remarked that the effectiveness of the Immigration Service hinges on government assistance.

He also announced ongoing plans for the state government to provide logistical support to security agencies, including the Immigration Service, to enhance their operational capacity.

Earlier, Assistant Comptroller General Chikezie outlined challenges faced by the Immigration Service, such as inadequate vehicles, motorcycles, office furniture, and poor accommodation. He appealed to the Assembly for support to address these critical needs.
