Community Violence Erupts in Kwara State Leading to Lynching of Chief Imam

Residents of the Sokupkpan community in the Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State were embroiled in a shocking act of violence on Wednesday, resulting in the lynching of Chief Imam Abdulahi Audu. The incident stemmed from allegations surrounding the death of local resident Ibrahim Gana.

Reports indicate that Gana had accused the Chief Imam of being responsible for his declining health, claiming that he frequently dreamt of the cleric attacking him. As Gana’s condition worsened, tensions in the community escalated, with many beginning to believe his accusations.

Witnesses revealed that a mob, allegedly led by three individuals—Mohammed Shaba, Mamudu Gana, and Ndakpotun Issa—confronted Imam Audu, accusing him of using witchcraft to harm Gana. Despite attempts by community elders to intervene, the mob proceeded to beat the Imam to death in broad daylight.

Authorities from the Tsaragi Police Division responded swiftly to the scene and arrested the three main suspects involved in the attack. Sources confirmed that the police had detained Shaba, Gana, and Issa, who are believed to have orchestrated the lynching.

Following the tragedy, Chief Imam Abdulahi Audu was laid to rest in accordance with Islamic rites on Wednesday evening, amid grief and unrest within the community. As of now, the Kwara State Police Command has not issued an official statement regarding the incident. The situation remains tense as the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent occurrence
