Federal Government Urged to Foster Collaboration with Universities for Enhanced Research Initiatives.

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna

In a compelling lecture delivered at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, Professor Sunday Albert Lawal, an esteemed engineering expert, urged the federal government to forge stronger partnerships with academic institutions to address critical national challenges through focused research efforts.

In his presentation, titled “Manufacturing Processes and Machining Operations,” Professor Lawal elucidated the transformative journey of raw materials into finished products, while underscoring his broader expertise in solving complex industrial issues.

He specifically referenced challenges faced by companies like NEPA (National Electric Power Authority) regarding the procurement of spare parts, advocating for a systematic approach where government agencies and corporations engage university research centers for collaborative problem-solving.

Highlighting the current barriers to effective research, Professor Lawal called for enhanced funding mechanisms to enable universities to acquire essential equipment and resources.

He noted that a lack of sufficient organizations providing research grants in Nigeria stifles innovation, particularly in the energy sector, where his own research involves developing plant-based oils aimed at preventing overheating in electrical transformers.

Professor Albert Lawal emphasized the importance of making research findings publicly accessible, advocating for a shift in university researchers’ priorities to ensure their work can benefit society at large.

He implored the federal government to implement supportive policies that would facilitate resource allocation and funding for research initiatives, allowing universities to take an active role in advancing Nigeria’s technological landscape. Without such support, he warned, valuable innovations poised to enhance the energy sector and other fields may remain unrealized.
