Niger State House of Assembly Directs Local Government Councils to Allocate 5% of Monthly Funding to Local Government Education Authority.

By Yahaya Zakka Minna

The Niger State House of Assembly has mandated the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to ensure that Local Government Councils allocate and release 5% of their monthly revenues to the Local Government Education Authority (LGEA) for running costs.

This directive stemmed from a motion introduced by Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, the Member representing Tafa Constituency, which urged the Executive Arm of the Niger State Government to prioritize the maintenance of infrastructures in public primary schools during a recent plenary session.

In presenting the motion, Hon. Sani Idris underscored the critical need for the upkeep of public primary schools in the state, pointing out that their current condition reflects years of neglect. He asserted that the allocation of 5% of monthly funding to the LGEA would significantly contribute to addressing the infrastructural challenges faced by these schools.

Following thorough deliberation, the House unanimously adopted several resolutions, including:

– Directing all Local Government Councils to establish and effectively operate the LGA and District Education Committee by providing regular sitting allowances and necessary operational support, in accordance with Section 10 of the NSUBEB Law.

– Urging the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB) to devise and implement a comprehensive maintenance plan for all public schools in Niger State, clearly delineating responsibilities among State, Local Government, and community stakeholders.

– Mandating the Education Committee and Local Government Committee to convene a tripartite meeting involving the Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Education, NSUBEB, Local Government Education Councils, Secondary School Education Board, and LGEA to address these issues and formulate effective resolutions.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. (Dr.) Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji, presiding over the session, instructed the Clerk of the House, Mall. Farouq Umar Isah, to promptly communicate the House’s resolutions to the Executive.
