Jonathan to Contest 2027 Presidential Election — Amaechi Confirms.
From Our Correspondent.
Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi confirmed that former President Goodluck Jonathan will run for president in the 2027 presidential election.
This confirmation comes amid mounting speculation and growing calls within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Jonathan to return as its flag bearer. Recently, former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, publicly endorsed Jonathan as the PDP’s strongest candidate to challenge President Bola Tinubu, describing him as the “best choice from the South.”
Speaking on a national television programme, Lamido lauded Jonathan’s leadership track record, collaborative style, and political acumen, saying these qualities set him apart within the PDP.
“He is their best bet. Nigerians will support anyone the PDP puts forward. But I believe Jonathan stands out—his governance record and ability to unite diverse political interests make him unmatched in the South,” Lamido said.
While noting that the PDP has not yet officially endorsed Jonathan, Lamido expressed optimism that the former president’s candidacy would energise the party and make the 2027 race fiercely competitive.
“If he joins the PDP, it will make the 2027 race very interesting. I don’t see a better alternative than Jonathan if he comes to the PDP,” Lamido added.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015, has yet to make a personal public statement regarding Amaechi’s confirmation. However, political watchers believe his re-entry could significantly alter the dynamics of the upcoming election.
