Niger State’s NYSC Orientation Camp Faces Closure Amidst Unfulfilled Promises.

The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Niger State Chapter, expresses grave concerns regarding the current state of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp located in Paiko.

One year following the pledge of ₦5 billion by His Excellency Rt. Hon. Farmer Umar Mohammed Bago, the Executive Governor of Niger State, for the construction of a new permanent camp, the existing facilities remain in dire condition, putting the future of youth orientation programs at risk.

As the 2025 Batch B Stream 1 orientation camp is scheduled to take place from 30th July to 19th August 2025, the council emphasizes that Niger State risks becoming the only one among the 36 states, including the Federal Capital Territory, unable to conduct this essential program due to inadequate infrastructure.

The current temporary camp, described as dilapidated and inhabitable, faces imminent closure by the Federal Government due to its unsafe conditions, jeopardizing the welfare of young graduates across the nation.

Despite the previous commitment to upgrade the facilities and provide a more conducive environment, many essential amenities remain unavailable.

The temporary hall suffers from severe leakage during rainfall, affecting the health and comfort of the corpers, who represent the nation’s future. Furthermore, the pledge to enhance the camp with additional toilet facilities has still not been fulfilled, reflecting poorly on Niger State’s dedication to youth development and wellbeing.

The council in a statement signed by  Comr. Hamza Mohammed Tatiko
Publicity Secretary also highlights the significant historical context, noting that activities at the temporary NYSC camp have long encroached upon the learning environment of Abubakar Dada Secondary School, which has housed NYSC activities for years. This situation has disrupted the educational experience of students, compromising their learning potential.

In light of these pressing issues, the National Youth Council of Nigeria urges Governor Bago to prioritize the swift construction of a new, modern NYSC Orientation Camp in Paiko. By doing so, he will reaffirm his commitment to nurturing the youth of Niger State and ensure that they have access to essential resources for their growth and development.

“Investment in a modern NYSC camp, alongside improvements to Abubakar Dada Secondary School, would not only serve the educational needs of upcoming generations but also symbolize a collective belief in the future of Nigeria’s youth”.

The council calls for immediate and decisive action from the state government to avoid disruption in the orientation of new graduates and to uphold the objectives of the NYSC program that contribute to national unity and community development.
