Niger State House Assembly Calls on Executive Arm of Government to Provide Aid to Victims of Violent Rainstorm.

From Our Correspondent.

Niger State House of Assembly has urged the Executive Arm of Government to swiftly mobilize manpower and resources through the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, or other relevant agencies to assist victims of a severe rainstorm in Darangi Ward of Rijau Local Government Area.

This resolution was passed following a Motion on a Matter of Urgent Public Importance presented by Hon. Alhaji (Dr.) Bello Bako, the Member Representing Rijau Constituency.

Hon. Bako reported that on April 30, 2025, Darangi Ward experienced one of the worst rainstorms in its history, resulting in the loss of one life and the destruction of over 170 residential houses, along with properties valued at millions of Naira.

The affected victims are devastated and helpless, having relocated to stay with relatives, many of whom lack the resources to begin rebuilding their destroyed properties.

Hon. Bako emphasized that without government intervention, many individuals will be left homeless and vulnerable as the rainy season approaches.

In a separate motion, Hon. Muhammad Sani Idris, the Member Representing Tafa Constituency, proposed that the House Standing Committee on Information hold press briefings after every plenary session to improve the publicity of legislative activities.

The House unanimously adopted the motion, urging the Committee to establish a weekly Assembly News Bulletin summarizing key legislative activities, debates, and resolutions.

The proponent of the motion underscored the importance of keeping the public well-informed in a transparent, accountable, and democratic legislature.

He lamented that the press center, created to conduct press briefings, has remained inactive since the 8th Assembly, hindering the accurate and timely dissemination of information and limiting public engagement and transparency.

Today’s plenary session was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Barr. Dr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji.
