IGP Bans Policemen in Mufti from Carrying Rifles.

By Yahaya Zakka, Minna.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued an immediate ban on policemen carrying assault rifles while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).

Egbetokun announced this directive during a virtual meeting with senior police officers, emphasizing the need for professionalism and respect for human rights within the Nigeria Police Force.

According to a statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP condemned the practice due to multiple complaints received through the Force’s official channels.

“The IGP has made it clear that no officer should be seen carrying assault weapons in mufti. Any violation of human rights will not be tolerated and will face severe consequences,” Adejobi stated.

This directive aims to reduce police misconduct and improve public trust in law enforcement amidst growing concerns about rights abuses by security personnel.

The statement continued, “The IGP also warned all tactical squads against the misuse of power and improper dress, emphasizing the importance of operating in approved uniforms. No officer should carry assault weapons (rifles) while dressed in civilian attire (mufti).

“All tactical squads are to ensure compliance with the standard operating procedures while properly dressed in the designated uniform for their particular squad.

The IGP further highlighted the issue of indiscriminate case transfers without the written approval of the IGP.

“This conduct is strictly prohibited and will no longer be tolerated, as it creates unnecessary burdens and delays justice for the parties involved.

“The IGP concluded by directing that all ranks must work collaboratively to prevent any irresponsible actions that could tarnish the reputation of the Force,” Adejobi added.
