Police declare buttock enlargement doctor wanted as 36-year-old client dies during surgery.
A doctor named Idara Bassey has been declared wanted following the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola, who died during a buttocks enlargement procedure in Lagos State.
Abiola had reportedly left her home in Diamond Estate, Sangotedo, located in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos State, on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, instructing her driver to take her to the clinic for the procedure.
The procedure, commonly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift, is a cosmetic surgery that involves extracting fat from other parts of the body and injecting it into the buttocks to achieve a fuller, rounder appearance.
Upon arriving at the clinic, Abiola was given an injection by a nurse, allegedly acting on Dr. Bassey’s instructions. According to the driver who accompanied her, Abiola lost consciousness and began gasping for breath shortly after the injection.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the incident and stated that the nurse who administered the injection had been arrested. However, Dr. Bassey, the clinic’s owner, is currently on the run.
“The clinic’s owner is on the run,” Hundeyin said, confirming that the doctor has been declared wanted and is considered a suspect in the case.
Medical experts have previously warned about the potential risks associated with such procedures, yet many women, particularly in Lagos, continue to undergo the surgery, as evidenced by numerous videos circulating online.I
In a related incident in April , a 23-year-old woman, Destiny Benjamin, died four days after a hip surgery at Cynosure Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in Lagos.
The clinic’s owner, Dr. Ogbe Omoruyi, denied that Benjamin died during the surgery, stating that she was referred to another hospital where she later passed away.
Additionally, in May 2024, a Federal High Court in Lagos convicted and sentenced cosmetic surgeon Dr. Anuoluwapo Adepoju to one year in prison for a failed plastic surgery that led to the death of Nneka Onwuzuligbo in 2020.
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) had charged Anuoluwapo and her medical facility on a five-count charge.
